About this book

The Arian Controversy is a book by Henry Melvill Gwatkin. The contents list, among others, gives chapters called "THE BEGINNINGS OF ARIANISM", "THE COUNCIL OF NICÆA" and "THE FALL OF ARIANISM". The book says Arianism is Christianity shaped by thoughts like these, and that its author was no mere bustling schemer, but a grave and blameless presbyter of Alexandria.

The book says Arius was a disciple of the greatest critic of his time, the venerated martyr Lucian of Antioch, and that at the outbreak of the controversy, about the year 318, we find him in charge of the church of Baucalis at Alexandria. The book names two disciples of Arius who held the neighbouring bishoprics of Mursa and Singidunum, the modern Belgrade. The conclusion says that Arianism was an illogical compromise: it went too far for heathenism, not far enough for Christianity.
