Self-Help Mechanical Drawing is an educational treatise by Nehemiah Hawkins. The front matter carries the proverb "Learn to do a thing by doing it." The dedication says that the work is dedicated to The Coming Man, who at the present time is undoubtedly devoting a goodly share of his spare time to the study of drawing. The preface says that the author is prompted to undertake the rather pleasant task of producing a self-help book relating to the subject.

The text describes thumb-tacks as the common means used to attach or secure slightly or temporarily the drawing paper to the drawing board. The text says that circles and curves are to be "inked in" before straight lines, and that the smallest should be inked first and afterwards the larger curves. The text advises that shade lines should be avoided in all working drawings, as their use interferes with accurate measurements.

Nehemiah Hawkins

Hawkins set out to explain electricity to the men who worked with it rather than to engineers who had studied it. His Electrical Guide ran to ten small flexible volumes from 1914, laid out as questions and answers and thick with line drawings, covering dynamos, motors, wiring, storage batteries, telegraphy and telephony.
