About this book
This collection carries the name of H. Norman Gardiner, Professor of Philosophy in Smith College, on its title page and is dated 1904, New York. Its contents list seven sermons with their years: God Glorified in Man's Dependence (1731), The Reality of Spiritual Light (1733), Ruth's Resolution (1735), The Many Mansions (1737), Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God (1741), A Strong Rod Broken and Withered (1748) and a Farewell Sermon (1750). An introduction and a section of notes come with them.
The introduction gives Edwards's birth as October 5, 1703, in what is now South Windsor, Connecticut, names his father as the Rev. Timothy Edwards, and calls him the 'Saint of New England', stressing his spirituality and intellect. It also places his thought in the line of Calvin and Augustine. In one sermon passage the souls of the wicked are compared to the troubled sea, and hellish principles in them are said to be held back by God's restraints.
