About this book
Shakespeare's Bones, by C. M. Ingleby, considers the proposal to disinter them in relation to their possible bearing on his portraiture. The book is further described as illustrated by instances of visits of the living to the dead. The text says it is held justifiable to exhume a body recently buried, in order to discover the cause of death, or to settle a question of disputed identity. The text adds that it is not usually held unjustifiable to exhume a body long since deceased, in order to find such evidences as time may not have wholly destroyed, of personal appearance.
The text says the last example to be adduced is that of Ben Jonson's skull. Lieut.-Colonel Cunningham is quoted as writing of the tradition about Jonson being buried in a standing posture. The text lists an anonymous article in the Birmingham Daily Gazette, of December 17, 1880, headed Excavations in the Church and Churchyard of Stratford-upon-Avon.
