About this book
Shavings, a novel, is by Joseph Crosby Lincoln, with illustrations by H. M. Brett. The list of illustrations includes the line "There was a momentary glimpse of a brindle cat with a mackerel crosswise in its mouth". The first chapter opens with the statement that Mr. Gabriel Bearse was happy, adding that this is not meant to imply that Gabriel was, as a general rule, unhappy.
Captain Sam, tired of waiting, urges Jed to finish her out. A speaker addressing Mr. Winslow says she begged Mr. Reed, the bank president there at home, who is an old, old friend of the family, to do this thing for their sakes. Jed's chair creaks again, which is the only sound, and Ruth waits until she feels that she can wait no longer.
