Shoulder to Shoulder by Gordon Stables is described on its title page as “A STORY OF THE STIRRING TIMES OF OLD.” The text quotes Sir John Moore as shouting “Hurrah, my lads; remember Egypt!” The text says the memory of the terrible atrocities committed by the Duke and his minions dwells in the hearts of the Highlanders, as if they had been committed but yester e'en.
The text says that in many a humble cottage home, by mountain, stream, or sea, those sweet old Jacobite songs are still sung. A colonel tells the narrator's grandfather that if he reports him to his regiment he is fully aware what the consequences will be, but says he will not report him and is himself a Mason. Tonal and the narrator's grandfather often accompanied Major Drake or Dr. McLeod in long rambles into the forests, with Red-Eye as their guide.
