About this book
The contents list Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods, with a prelude for the latter work and acts listed beneath each title. Mime complains that care has been paid for with scorn, describing the reward for his trouble as hatred and harassment from a hot-tempered boy. Siegfried tells Mime that he has learned much from him but has not learned how to endure the sight of him.
Siegfried says that he battled through fire without a shield or breastplate, and speaks of flames from Brünnhilde's rock now burning within his breast. The stage directions bring the hall of the Gibichungs into view at night, with moonlight mirrored in the Rhine and Gutrune emerging from her chamber.
