About this book
Sigurd Our Golden Collie, and Other Comrades of the Road is a book by Katharine Lee Bates. A note says a few of the sketches and poems in the volume have already appeared in print. The contents list names pieces such as Puppyhood, The Dogs of Bethlehem and Growing Up, among others.
The text says Njal was far too sensible a collie to disdain a good dinner. Njal had known nothing of cellars, and the terror with which that unnatural, lonesome hollow under ground affected him lasted for two full years. Sigurd's House was such a palace that the children of the neighborhood liked to play in it, but the collie deemed this high trespass and would roar indignant protest from the screened study porch. The text calls Petrarch and Tasso eminent witnesses to the Italian fondness for cats.
