About this book

The Poetical Works of Oliver Wendell Holmes gathers poems by Oliver Wendell Holmes. The contents list, under Earlier Poems (1830-1836), names, among others, Old Ironsides, The Last Leaf, The Cambridge Churchyard and To an Insect.

The Treadmill Song speaks of the stars rolling in the sky, the earth rolling on below, and the rattling wheel revolving as we go. A note under the heading The September Gale says that the tremendous hurricane occurred on the 23d of September, 1815, and that the writer remembers it well, being then seven years old. A poem says that at the polar focus of the wire electric a white-faced man suddenly appeared among us and called himself DE SAUTY. A poem addresses a fair maiden, when her lovers sigh, and tells her to suspect her flattering ear but trust her eye, and to learn this secret from the tale of old: no love so true as love that dies untold.
