About this book

Cornwall's winding lanes test the confidence of a young doctor seeking better prospects. Arriving in Penzance, he decides to walk towards St. Just, but his eagerness to cross the countryside leads him astray. At a cottage, he treats a boy with a broken collarbone before continuing across rough moorland. These early encounters establish the lively humour and practical concerns of R. M. Ballantyne's adventure for younger readers.

Life beneath the surface gives the story a different urgency. A mine flood traps Oliver Trembath with James Penrose and John Cock, bringing physical danger and questions of faith into the same confined space. Penrose turns to prayer as the water rises, while the crisis demands help between companions. The novel's mining setting brings courage, responsibility and the risks of working underground into focus. Readers interested in Cornish life can find local speech, rugged scenery and the contrast between comic mishaps and serious communal danger.
