About this book
A crowded railway platform begins this Irish comedy with an awkward mistake. Judge Sir Gilbert Hawkesby approaches a woman he takes for his niece, only to find that her striking resemblance has misled him. His real niece, Millicent King, writes novels under the name Ena Dunkeld and is heading to Connacht to gather material for a new story. She has rented a house with salmon fishing attached, while her uncle looks forward to a holiday on the river.
George A. Birmingham builds the humor through brisk exchanges, wounded dignity and people who are sure they understand one another. J. J. presses for Simpkins to propose to Miss King and plans to divert the judge by telling a carefully selected truth. Literary ambitions, fishing arrangements and meddling over marriage become competing concerns. Readers who enjoy conversational comedy can follow the gap between confident explanations and the doubts they provoke.
