About this book
The preface says the book is about the veracity of Sir Walter Scott, who has been suspected of helping to compose, and of issuing as a genuine antique, a ballad, Auld Maitland. The preface states that Sir Walter did not lie, and that he did obtain the whole ballad from Hogg, who got it from recitation, as the author believes and tries to prove.
Lesley, Bishop of Ross, is quoted writing in 1578 that the Borderers take much pleasure in their old music and chanted songs, which they themselves compose. The text says Knox speaks of ballads on Queen Mary’s four Maries, and that of these ballads only one is left, and it is a libel. The author names three imitations of his own, including Simmy o’ Whythaugh, which he says is based on facts in the Border despatches.
