About this book

On the small, mountainous island of Ithaca, a young Ulysses learns to sail, hunt and handle a bow while growing up in the household of King Laertes. Andrew Lang begins his retelling of Greek legends with these everyday details before moving into the conflicts around Troy and the wanderings that follow. The collection also includes the search for the Golden Fleece and the adventures of Theseus and Perseus, with illustrations credited to H. J. Ford.

Lang tells the stories in prose, explaining names, customs and places as they arise. Orchards, fishing boats and family conversations sit beside encounters with gods and monsters. In one passage, Ulysses competes at games among the Phaeacians and listens to a singer recount deeds from Troy. Readers looking for connected accounts of Greek legends can follow both the action and the recurring pull of home, hospitality and reputation.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
