About this book
A prince must prove himself before he can marry, and his search for three mysterious bulrushes takes him through kingdoms where birds answer the calls of old people with magic pipes. This opening tale, Lovely Ilonka, sets the pattern for a collection in which everyday needs lead into enchanted circumstances. Andrew Lang presents these stories as an editor, drawing together traditional tales adapted for children by several contributors.
Published in 1903, The Crimson Fairy Book includes stories rooted in Hungary, Japan, Iceland and other places named in its preface. Princes, talking creatures and magical objects fill its contents. In The Stone-Cutter, a wish to gain greater power brings a succession of transformations, each revealing another limit to strength. The collection offers readers a way to compare the hopes, tricks and lessons of folk tales from different cultures, with short narratives that move between wonder, danger and practical wisdom.
