About this book
The narrator describes imprisonment in the Petersburg House of Detention as a time when his spirits were more cheerful than since his first arrest. An account of an earlier prison explains how running water allowed prisoners to use connected pipes as speaking-tubes while preventing an inconvenient odour. There the prisoners used this arrangement to establish a club of twelve members who could communicate through their cells.
The account describes a librarian responsible for printed matter, with the circulation of each new book or newspaper arranged exactly beforehand. The prisoners could keep gifts for themselves or hand them over for allocation by lot, while gifts of food were divided among the rooms. The narrator recalls Professor Thun offering a key to the prison’s outer door, although no escape plans were feasible from his current cell.
