About this book
The book is The Story of a Siberian Exile, followed by a Narrative of Recent Events in Poland, credited to Rufin Piotrowski. Rufin Piotrowski writes of seeing a village of two hundred miserable houses, all built of wood, near the river Irtiche, and names the place Ekaterinski-Zavod. Piotrowski says his office was the rendezvous of a great number of travellers, who came both for the sale of grain and to buy spirituous liquors. The author calls the young Russian, Stépan Bazanov, manager of the factory for the lessees, his great ally there.
The text names Count Andrew Zamoyski, whom the people speaking his language simply call “Monsieur André.” A description of the punishment of being marked says the letters vor (meaning thief, or malefactor) are printed on a stamp, which is driven into the forehead and into both cheeks.
