About this book
A birthday visit brings Skeeter Bill Sarg back to Yellow Butte, where news of an old friend changes the mood of his return. Hooty Edwards has received a long prison sentence for a bank robbery, leaving his wife to support their two children. Skeeter has travelled from Texas to celebrate the twelfth birthday of the boy named after him. In conversations about Yellow Butte, he starts asking about the robbery, a lost ranch and a former saloon worker whose fortunes have improved.
W. C. Tuttle combines cowboy banter with close observation in this Western novelet. A dummy set beside a spring draws rifle fire, and Skeeter follows boot marks and gathers cartridge cases while trying to understand who wants him out of the way. The appeal lies in the contrast between his lanky appearance, dry speech and practical alertness, with a family friendship giving the mystery a personal stake.
