About this book
Small Gardens, and How to Make the Most of Them is by Violet Purton Biddle. The chapter summaries name, among others, The Propagation of Plants, by division, cuttings, seeds and layers, and The Management of Room Plants, which covers the importance of cleanliness and the proper way of watering them. A list of terms used by gardeners explains Mulching as applying manure in a thick layer round the roots of shrubs, as a protection from frost.
The grape-hyacinths are said to have very quaint little flowers of a bright dark-blue colour, on stalks about five or six inches high, to flower for some weeks, and to need massing together to get a good effect. The miniature narcissus is called the sweetest thing imaginable, and N. minus is only a few inches high, apt to get splashed when in the open border but charming amongst stones in a sheltered position on the rockery. The index has an entry for Enemies of the garden, listing Earwigs, Mice, Slugs and Wireworms, to get rid of.
