War Gardens, A Pocket Guide for Home Vegetable Growers, is by Montague Free, Head Gardener Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The preface says the purpose of the book is to state simply and clearly the ways and means necessary to obtain the largest returns from small plots of land. The contents list names, among others, Insect Enemies, Plant Diseases, and Harvesting and Storing.
The text says that by co-operative effort it is possible to hire a team and plow and have such plots plowed at a trifling expense. A community garden organization can buy garden tools, such as wheelbarrows, wheel-hoes, a sprayer, and other comparatively costly tools. The text says the tomato-worm, the larva of a Sphinx-moth, sometimes occasions much damage, and that hand picking is a good remedy, or the plants may be sprayed with lead arsenate.
