About this book
Three essays is a book by Thomas Mann. The contents list names, among others, Goethe and Tolstoy, Frederick the Great and the Grand Coalition and An Experience in the Occult. Under the heading Goethe and Tolstoy, the text says that at the beginning of our century a man was still living in Weimar, Julius Stötzer by name and schoolmaster by calling.
The text gives words that it says are Tolstoy's, taken from his Confessions, about feeling for someone more than enthusiasm, namely worship, and wearing at fifteen, instead of the usual crucifix, a medallion with that person's picture. The text says that Tolstoy was Rousseauian more intimately, more personally, more damagingly, so to speak, than was Goethe. The text asks the reader to recall the place in Lohengrin, in the first act, after Else's prayer, when the chorus begins in unison.
