About this book
Some Religious and Moral Teachings of Al-Ghazzali gathers brief extracts from his Ihya-u-Ulum-id-din, freely rendered into English by Syed Nawab Ali. An introduction is by Alban G. Widgery, Professor of the Comparative Study of Religions. A story in the text has Jesus pass by some ascetics who were reduced in body and who reply that fear of hell and hope of heaven have reduced them to this condition.
The text says God alone is perfect beauty: holy, independent, omnipotent, all-majesty, all-beneficent, all-merciful. A biographical passage tells of a man honoured by appointment in 484 A.H. to the "University" or "Academy" of Baghdad, where he soon acquired great renown as lawyer and theologian. In a story the Evil One entreats a hermit to accept two golden dinars which he will find at his bed side every morning from tomorrow.
