About this book
Thomas Grierson Gracie of Wanlockhead published this collection in Dumfries in 1921. The index sorts the pieces into groups, among them descriptive pieces, memoriam pieces and songs. Titles include Ridge of Glengonar, A Fishin' Splore, The Otter Hunt, Mennock Burn, Last of the Old Band, My Auld Violin and Davy's Grave.
In a personal note and preface the author describes himself as a self-taught man and makes no claim to the honour of being a poet. He gives the tunes of a number of songs when they are well known, and says that one third of the pieces had already been published. The verse includes Scots dialect, among it a courtship song with a refrain about the turning of the wheel. A recruiting song called To Arms and a poem dedicated to Wanlock soldiers also appear.
