About this book
In an August garden, a grieving speaker mourns beside the place where a precious pearl was lost. Flowers and fragrant herbs grow over the ground as he reflects on the earth holding his treasure. He crosses his hands in prayer and falls asleep, carrying sorrow into a dream. This anonymous medieval poem gives that grief a carefully patterned voice, using recurring images of the pearl, the earth and the growth of living things.
The dream opens onto a Christian vision of a radiant city drawn from the Revelation of St. John. Its walls shine with jewels, its gates are single pearls, and a bright river flows from the divine throne. White robes and pearl crowns echo the treasure mourned in the garden. Readers interested in religious verse can follow how intimate sadness meets a larger account of heavenly order, while the repeated rhymes connect earthly longing with brilliant visual detail.
