About this book
An old man watches the sunset and begins to speak of a vanished happiness in James Allan Mackereth's Ioläus. The long title poem carries his recollections from a sea voyage and an enchanted island into visions of isolation, grief and spiritual fear. Bright shores, a ruined castle and the presence of a beloved companion give way to the unsettling thought that human love must live under the shadow of loss.
The verse moves through shifting rhythms and dense images of sea, flame, darkness and immense space. In the middle passage, the speaker experiences a strange division between body and spirit, addressing God amid bewildering visions. A group of sonnets follows the main poem, with titles including The Soul and the Sea and Nations Estranged. Readers interested in poetry about mortality, faith and the limits of the self will find those concerns given dramatic, often dreamlike form.
