About this book

An appeal for charitable support becomes an occasion for jokes, social observations and memories of the newspaper trade in this collection of Charles Dickens's public addresses. In the speech excerpts, he links the work of newsmen to changes in English society and explains the practical benefits of an annuity scheme. At a Newspaper Press Fund dinner in London in 1865, he compares a young institution with a child displayed proudly after a family meal.

Published in the packet's 1880 edition, the volume also includes an introduction tracing Dickens's early work as a reporter, magazine contributor and dramatist. Its title page announces additional chapters on his letters, poetry and public reading. Readers interested in literary history can follow the connections between his professional beginnings and his public voice. The speeches offer examples of how he moves from an amusing comparison to an argument about the uses of charitable money and public support.
