About this book
The Battle of Life appears in the Works of Charles Dickens, Volume 4, Christmas Books. A fierce battle is said to have been fought in stalwart England upon a long summer day when the waving grass was green, and the stream ran red. The dancing sisters dance among the orchard trees, and the younger, out of breath and laughing gaily, throws herself upon a bench to rest.
In one exchange Mr. Britain tells Clemmy that the most extraordinary thing is that he should live to be brought round, through her. Clemency observes “Do as you wold, you know, and cetrer, eh!” folding her arms comfortably in her delight. One woman tells her sister that she saw Mr. Warden, confided in his honour, and charged him with her secret on the eve of his and her departure, and that he kept it.
