About this book
This is the Life of St. Malachy of Armagh by Bernard of Clairvaux, in the English translation of H. J. Lawlor, with an introduction, in a volume dated 1920.
The contents list principal authorities, a guide to names of Irish persons and places, an introduction, the Life itself, Bernard's letters, his sermons on the passing of Malachy, and additional notes on the state of the Irish Church, the succession of the coarbs of Patrick and Malachy's contest with Niall. One passage describes Danish settlements in Dublin, Wexford, Waterford and Limerick that took up the Christian faith and came to be ruled by bishops, and mentions the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity founded in Dublin about 1040. In another passage, a man named Sycarus points out the holy bishop he had foretold would come from Ireland, and when Malachy's companions ask about their return he replies that very few of them would come back with the bishop.
