About this book
St. Leon is subtitled A Tale of the Sixteenth Century and is by William Godwin. Pavia is said to be defended on one side by the Tesino, and the king believed that if this river could be diverted from its course by the labour of his army, the town must instantly fall into his hands. The nobility of France, who attended their sovereign in great numbers, are said to accompany the infantry in their labour and to lay aside the marquée, tapestry and carpets.
The keeper of the prison interposes and says that an escape will be a thing open and notorious, and that a confederate is needed, so that the keeper may not bear the blame of it. A narrator who speaks of "my son" says there was no present propensity in the heart to delight in deeds of blood and war, and says "I hated and loathed them from my very inmost soul".
