About this book

The preface describes an attempt to give a defined and permanent form to thoughts accumulated over thirty-four years, while qualifying the claim that such thoughts had not previously appeared in print. The discussion of schoolboys identifies sheepishness as a main cause of their poor appearance when questioned, distinguishing their conduct among equals from their response to seniors. The schoolmaster is called a despot on the stated ground that anyone who judges solely by an impulse of personal will is a despot.

The discussion of moral sentiments connects feelings toward other people and toward oneself with what the text calls a delusive sense of liberty. The image of a spectator taken behind a puppet show's curtain supplies a comparison for having the illusions of life corrected.
