About this book
Queen Hortense: A Life Picture of the Napoleonic Era is by L. Mühlbach, translated from the German by Chapman Coleman in 1910. The contents list, among others, Book I, Days of Childhood and of the Revolution, and Book II, The Queen of Holland, with chapters in Book I such as The Prophecy and General Bonaparte. Viscount Beauharnais, promoted to commanding general for his gallantry on the battle-field of Soissons, is accused by his own officers of being an enemy of France, and is arrested and thrown into the prison of the Luxembourg. Josephine is arrested and thrown into the prison of St. Pelagie, and Eugene and Hortense are now little better than orphans.
An antique cameo of immense size portrays the heads of Alexander the Great and of his father, Philip of Macedonia, side by side. The emperor at first refuses to accept this truly imperial present, and yields only when he perceives that his refusal would offend the empress.
