About this book
St. Paul's Epistles to the Colossians and Philemon is a commentary on two Greek texts, by J. B. Lightfoot. A transcriber's note explains that on each page several lines of Greek are accompanied by a double column of notes on key words, and that in this version each note follows the text it glosses.
One note discusses the Greek word for umpire in connection with the peace of Christ, quoting Chrysostom, Polybius and Philo, and compares other passages in Paul's letters. Another, on the name Onesimus, lists similar Greek names and cites Latin inscriptions, including the spelling Honesimus. Another note explains the change from you to us, with the word for remission and the image of the cancelled bond.
