About this book

Stain Removal from Fabrics, by Margaret Smith Furry, is a set of home methods for cleaning cloth. A short list of rules opens it: treat the stain while it is fresh, know what the cloth is made of, try simple methods first, avoid hot water on an unknown stain, test for color change on a sample, and use light brushing motions rather than rubbing a remover into the stain.

Separate paragraphs deal with cotton and linen, wool and silk, and rayon and synthetics, naming which acids, alkalies and bleaches harm each and noting that sodium perborate and hydrogen peroxide are among the safest bleaches. Entries are grouped by kind of stain, and they include fruit stains, for which hydrosulfite is suggested for white material, and glue and mucilage. Javelle water is used on uncolored linen or cotton for one minute, followed by a sodium thiosulfate solution to remove the chlorine and a rinse.
