Harper's Household Handbook, subtitled A Guide to Easy Ways of Doing Woman's Work, is by Martha McCulloch-Williams. Under the heading Roses and Woody Things in General, the text says only a very few roses are adapted to house culture unless there is a greenhouse for their refreshing. The text says all plants need a moist atmosphere, so water should be kept on radiators and wet sponges over registers.
Under the heading Ironing-boards, the text says to shape the blanket, sew up, and fit smoothly, letting the small end of the board project bare an inch or two. Under the heading Coffee, the text says green coffee beans break with a clean fracture, and if the break is ragged or spongy there has been mold or heating. The text says that to test for adulteration, one stirs a pinch of ground coffee into a glass of cold water, and that pure coffee settles to the bottom, leaving hardly a trace of color.
