About this book

Henrietta Symons wants to matter to her family, but a crowded household gives her little room to belong. The daughter of a solicitor in an English country town, she briefly enjoys the attention of visitors before becoming the child left out of sibling confidences. F. M. Mayor's 1913 novel traces the habits and resentments that grow around this hunger for affection within nineteenth-century social life.

Later, money gives Henrietta some independence without supplying a purpose. A family quarrel strains her closest ties, and an attempt at charitable work in London exposes how poorly she accepts correction or fits among committed workers. Small failures of sympathy carry much of the story's weight. Readers interested in family relationships and the limited choices available to unmarried women will find a character whose loneliness is inseparable from her own difficult behaviour.
