State of the Union Addresses collects addresses by Abraham Lincoln dated December 3, 1861, December 1, 1862, December 8, 1863 and December 6, 1864. The address dated December 3, 1861 speaks of unprecedented political troubles and of great gratitude to God for unusual good health and most abundant harvests. The December 3, 1861 address also says that a disloyal portion of the American people have during the whole year been engaged in an attempt to divide and destroy the Union.
An address says that if any good reason exists why we should persevere longer in withholding recognition of the independence and sovereignty of Hayti and Liberia, the speaker is unable to discern it. The text says a dollar will be much harder to pay for the war than a dollar for emancipation on the proposed plan, and that the latter will cost no blood, no precious life. The text also mentions General Sherman's attempted march of 300 miles directly through the insurgent region.
