About this book

State of the Union Addresses collects addresses by Calvin Coolidge dated December 6, 1923, December 3, 1924, December 8, 1925, December 7, 1926, December 6, 1927 and December 4, 1928. The address dated December 6, 1923 speaks of the loss of President Harding, and says the world knew his kindness and his humanity, his greatness and his character. Under the heading PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS, an address says the time has come to resume in a moderate way the opening of our intracoastal waterways and the control of flood waters of the Mississippi and of the Colorado Rivers.

Under the heading PROTECTIVE TARIFF, an address estimates that customs receipts for the present fiscal year will exceed $615,000,000, the largest which were ever secured from that source. The text puts the value of imports for the last fiscal year at $4,466,000,000, an increase of more than 71 per cent since the present tariff law went into effect. An address says long-term contracts are being made with American steamship lines for carrying mail, which already promise the construction of 15 to 20 new vessels.
