About this book
Calvin Coolidge recalls a childhood in Plymouth, Vermont, among narrow valleys, high hills, and hard, rocky soil. Born on July 4, 1872, he describes his first home, a cottage attached to the post office and general store run by his father. His memories bring together lessons in work and saving, the distractions of play, and practical skills learned by watching and helping his father.
The later account turns to his service as Governor of Massachusetts and the demands that followed the war. Coolidge describes an election season disrupted by influenza, the celebration of the Armistice, and efforts to help returning service members find private employment. He sets out priorities including public health, education, fair wages, lower government expenses, and reorganization of state departments. His account of opposing an increase in legislators' salaries shows how his views on public spending met resistance. Readers can compare his memories of rural work with his stated priorities in government.
