State of the Union Addresses, credited to Franklin D. Roosevelt, gathers addresses dated from January 3, 1934 to January 6, 1945. One address says the speaker comes before the Regular Session of the 73d Congress not to make requests for special or detailed items of legislation but to counsel with the listeners. Another address says it will seek to move as rapidly as possible from direct relief to publicly supported work and from that to the rapid restoration of private employment.

An address says that what is faced is a set of world-wide forces of disintegration, vicious, ruthless and destructive of all the moral, religious and political standards which mankind has come to cherish most. An address recalls that, in the words of one American historian, the Revolutionary War left behind it an eddy of lawlessness and disregard of human life.
