About this book
The Inaugural Address of Franklin Delano Roosevelt was given in Washington, D.C. on March 4th, 1933, and speaks to President Hoover, Mr. Chief Justice and my friends. The speaker says his firm belief is that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, which he calls nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.
The address lists the difficulties of the moment: values have shrunk to fantastic levels, taxes have risen, farmers find no markets for their produce, and the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone. The speaker calls for strict supervision of all banking and credits and investments, an end to speculation with other people's money, and provision for an adequate but sound currency. The speaker says the people of the United States have not failed, and that they have registered a mandate that they want direct, vigorous action.
