About this book

Morris Monk looks from a coastal cliff toward the stars and imagines how far a signal might travel. Trained as an electrical engineer, he is struggling to perfect paired wireless telephones that he calls aerophones. An early success lets him hear his cousin Mary Porson across several miles, but repeating the experiment proves difficult. Their conversations link his technical problem with changes in feeling and understanding between two people.

Published in 1904, H. Rider Haggard's novel combines an inventor's ambitions with romantic conflict and spiritual speculation. In a later scene, Stella tries to ease a misunderstanding with Morris over dinner. She describes the Danish grandmother from whom she recorded a Norse saga and its traditional songs, and he asks her to sing. These exchanges give the story an interest in communication through science, music and personal sympathy. Readers drawn to fiction about belief and emotional attachment can follow the tension between practical invention and hopes that reach beyond it.
