About this book

On her twenty-second birthday, Beatrice Granger stands among coastal rocks as mist gathers over a still sea. Memories of her mother's death mingle with dissatisfaction at years of work that seem to have brought little reward. H. Rider Haggard begins this 1893 romance with close attention to tides, seaweed and the changing evening light. Further along the Welsh coast, Geoffrey Bingham, a barrister, waits beneath a warning bell, hoping to shoot curlew through the fog.

The later excerpt shifts to London's domestic and professional tensions. During an argument over Effie's treatment, Geoffrey objects to a threat to punish the child. He then thinks of Beatrice as he considers his difficult home life. The following morning brings a probate case and a court that presses him to proceed after he requests a delay. Readers can find an English novel that sets private unhappiness beside public composure, moving from the quiet observation of the shore to the demands of legal work.
