About this book
A storm off the English coast puts Eric and his companion Skallagrim at the mercy of wind, waves and a failing ship. H. Rider Haggard's adventure novel draws on Icelandic saga traditions, placing love, feuds and supernatural forces within a world of warriors and seafaring. Its introduction explains how family conflicts became stories retold by generations of poets, gathering visions and magical incidents along the way.
Eric's conduct at sea gives these themes a human scale. At the helm, he blames his own stubbornness for the danger facing his exhausted crew, while Skallagrim watches the weather and urges a course towards land. Elsewhere, Swanhild calls to an unseen presence from her room on Straumey Isle.
