About this book

Seven tales by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) are gathered here in an English translation, in a London edition from Hodder and Stoughton illustrated by Edmund Dulac.

The longest piece is "The Snow Queen", told in seven stories. It begins with a demon's distorting mirror that shatters, its splinters lodging in people's eyes and hearts, and turns to two neighbouring children, Kay and Gerda, whose families grow roses in window-boxes across a gutter between their attics. Around it sit "The Mermaid", "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Nightingale", "The Real Princess", "The Garden of Paradise" and "The Wind's Tale".

These are fairy tales in the plainest sense, with talking winds, a mermaid and a nightingale that sings for an emperor in China, and they read aloud easily to children.
