About this book

Andrew Lang gathered these twenty-nine stories in 1907 from far beyond the usual European nursery. The collection opens with Madschun, a tale from the Turks supplied by Dr. Ignaz Künos, and goes on to stories collected in India by Major Campbell, Armenian tales from Monsieur Macler, a Danish story called The Green Knight and a tale Mrs. Lang adapted from Anatole France. Most of the book was translated and retold for young readers by Mrs. Lang.

Readers meet a blue parrot, a snake prince, a silent princess, a boy who at last finds fear, and Ram Singh, a young servant sent down a haunted well for water while he remembers the counsel of an old guru. H. J. Ford's drawings and eight coloured plates illustrated the first edition.

Lang's preface is a pleasure of its own: a short, witty history of fairy tales from Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy to the Grimms, and a plea that children be allowed to choose their own books.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
