About this book

Stories of Charlemagne and the Twelve Peers of France is told from the old romances by Alfred John Church. The preface says the volume tells the story of Charlemagne, the Charlemagne, it must be understood, not of history, but of Romance. The preface says Charlemagne suffers by comparison with Roland and Reynaud very much as, in the Iliad, Agamemnon suffers by comparison with the subordinate King, Achilles.

Duke Richard of Normandy comes to the King at Paris with thirty thousand men, and the lords and knights pitch their tents in the meadows of St. Germain. Roland says to Madam, let us see your gods, adding that if they have such power as she says, the speakers will surely worship them. The Lady Sybil thinks within herself, Dare I do this thing?, adding it were better to die than to remain in this bondage.
