About this book
The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur is by Howard Pyle. The volume announces the fourth and last series of histories relating to the life and to the kingship of Arthur, King of England, telling first how it befell with Sir Geraint and then how the Holy Grail was achieved by Sir Galahad. Sir Geraint inquires concerning lodging, and a fat man tells him that there is no lodging to be had in this town at such a time as this, but that if he will cross the valley to yonder ruined castle he will doubtless find lodgings for the night.
Sir Geraint approaches the ruined castle, where an old man walked along upon the parapet of the wall, clad in poor and simple garments. A company says they wait outside the castle while seven knights hide within its walls, and Sir Galahad answers, For shame, that ye who are several should thus besiege seven men who cannot stand against ye. Asked by the King what he saw, Sir Bedivere says that he beheld the moon shining on high and the waves of the sea breaking noisily up against the pebbles of the beach, but naught else.
