About this book
The Days of Chivalry carries the subtitle Or, The Legend of Croquemitaine. A description says that on the borders of a wood stood a pavilion more magnificent than all the others, that of Charlemagne, of cloth of gold with purple stripes, powdered with gold eagles. Jugglers, troubadours, minstrels, and all other classes of poor Bohemians are described as rambling about at random, with wits that are sharp if their purses are scant.
Mitaine, choosing a new arrow, says 'I am afraid this is likely to make the infidels squint!' Roland, heedless of all that was passing around him, is said to continue his work of destruction, and the wall began at last to yawn. Two thousand knights dismount and, with Gautier de Luz at their head, commence the ascent. Mitaine is described as more active and lighter than the others, and as going first to reconnoitre.
