About this book
The subject is straw hats, their history and manufacture. The text says each lot of plait for dyeing carries a numbered wooden "tally," the number corresponding with the dye ticket left in the office or "giving out" room. The text says some plaits receive, when dyed, a "finish" of a glucose mixture which has two effects, it gives better gloss to the material and it assists in preventing the colour coming off during the manufacturing processes.
The text says that where boaters are lined with flannel, cotton or satin, they are generally made in the form of a thin pad, and for certain markets are much esteemed. The text says the other part of the interior of a boater is sometimes left without any other adornment, but generally the sides are decorated with a lining of white open work net.
