About this book
Elementary Botany is by George Francis Atkinson, Professor of Botany in Cornell University. The preface describes the present book as a revision and elaboration of the author’s earlier “Elementary Botany” of 1898, with considerable new matter added, especially on the subjects of nutrition and digestion. A parasite is defined as an organism which derives all or a part of its food directly from another living organism, its host, and at the latter’s expense.
The dodder (Cuscuta), parasitic on clover, is given as an example among the seed plants, along with a great variety of other plants. A table equates stamen with spore-bearing leaf and male member of flower, and pollen grain with small spore and reduced male prothallium and sexual organ. A paragraph on the action of the stomata says the guard cells serve an important function in regulating transpiration.
