The book weighs ambition against conscience, and asks what a man of action does once the action is taken from him. Written in 1893 by an Irish nationalist who sat in Parliament, it reads as the political novel of someone who knew real corridors of power, and it carries the flavour of late-Victorian society fiction with a conspiratorial edge.

Justin McCarthy

Justin McCarthy (1830-1912) was an Irish nationalist politician, journalist, historian, and novelist. He served as a Member of Parliament and led the anti-Parnellite faction of the Irish Parliamentary Party during the 1890s. He is best remembered for his multi-volume popular history, A History of Our Own Times, alongside a steady output of fiction.
